STETHS gear up for big showdown against Clarendon
The road to crowning a new ISSA daCosta Cup king begins on Saturday as the league is expected to roar to life with quarterfinal matchups set to kick off at 3 p.m.
In the west, Zone 2 winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) are gearing up for a marquee showdown with 11-time champions Clarendon College at home.
Speaking to STAR SPORTS, STETHS' head coach Omar Wedderburn said the objective is to advance.
"This is a new chapter starting on Saturday. We are hungry right now and we are going forward being a hungry crocodile," said Wedderburn.
"The aim is to advance as far as the 20th of December. That is where we are playing to so we have to go on the training field and make all the preparations for the game," added Wedderburn, as he noted the date for the final.
As for Clarendon College, they are back in the quarterfinals after failing to advance last season.
Though an uphill task, they will look to upset STETHS' unbeaten streak.
An interesting encounter will have football lovers' eyes locked in on a tough matchup with Group 1's 12-time powerhouse Cornwall College who will host last year's finalists McGrath High at Cornwall College.
Coming into this season, Cornwall had eyes set on advancing to quarterfinals after failing to do so since 2023.
Having achieved that goal, the Zone 1 winners, with the most daCosta Cup titles, are now looking to go further.
Head coach of Cornwall, Hector Wright, said the aim is to remain focused and control the game.
"Once we apply ourselves properly and do what we need to do we will be on the right track. Coming into this round, the teams will be tougher," said Wright.
"We will need the senior players to step up and perform for the team. Once we have that we should be good," added Wright.
Cornwall finished the round of 16 with seven goals for, while conceding one.
St Catherine-based McGrath are prepared to do what it takes to advance to the semifinals, according to head coach Jermaine Thomas.
"Going up against Cornwall in Montego Bay is always going to be a difficult task. But we are going to be up to it at this stage of the competiton," Thomas said, noting the team has been doing well this season.
"All is there to play for. We are never afraid of any team but we respect our opponents and we will treat the game as such," Thomas added, stating the players are motivated.
Banking on a positive campaign, McGrath will look to end their opponents' unbeaten streak at home this season.
McGrath, finished the round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat against Dinthill, making it their first loss this season.
